Mosquito season is here, and health officials are reminding residents to take simple steps to protect themselves and their families from West Nile Virus (WNV). West Nile Virus spreads through infected mosquito bites and returns to communities each year. Information from the Greater Los Angeles County Vector Control District notes that reducing standing water around your home is one of the best ways to lower mosquito activity.

Common symptoms can include:

• Fever
• Headaches and body aches
• Joint pain
• Skin rash
• More severe symptoms in rare cases

Residents are encouraged to inspect their yards weekly and remove standing water that mosquitoes use to lay eggs.

Areas to check include:

• Pet bowls
• Trash containers
• Roof gutters
• Bird baths
• Plant saucers
• Rain barrels
• Children’s toys
• Tires
• Pools and ponds
