LADWP Scoping Hearing for the Los Angeles Groundwater Replenishment (GWR) Project

The LA Department of Water & Power will be hosting a scoping meeting regarding the Groundwater Replenishment Project this Thursday. The project proposal calls to use up to 30,000 acre-feet (more than 9.7 billion gallons) per year of recycled water from the Tillman Water Reclamation Plant (adjacent to Woodley Park) to replenish the San Fernando Groundwater Basin (specifically the Pacoima and Hansen Spreading Grounds).
Please stop by the meeting to let the DWP know what some of your concerns might be and thoughts on the project (Ex. Dust, traffic during construction, what are the mitigation measures?)
The process of the project consists of three steps:
1.Treatment - Construction of a new advanced water purification facility at the existing Tillman Reclamation Plant site.
2.Conveyance - Use of new (running along Canterbury Ave. in Arleta) and existing pipelines to carry the recycled water from the Tillman Plant to nearby spreading grounds and wells.
3.Replenishment - Installation of 13 new injection wells to increase groundwater supply and supplement local water supplies.
If successful, the project hopes to maintain the reliability of the City’s water supply and reduce the need for imported water.
The “estimated” cost of the project is as follows:
Capital Improvement: $379-415 million
Annual operations and maintenance: $17 million
Please keep in mind that the project is still in its Initial Study phase. The draft and final EIR, as well as the adoption by the Board of Water & Power commissioners will follow within the next two years.
